Got back my Common Test 1 results already. Improved 1 subject only. The rest all deproved. The worst is Physics which I dropped from A to C. Didn't really expect it too. I was quite shocked when Mrs Tan suddenly told me, "You missed your distinction, you know?" But oh well, it's all over and what I can do now is to work harder for CT2 and beyond and make sure that I don't make the same mistakes over again.

2 months ago during CNY celebrations, there were 2 periods of lesson in the morning (I think it was the Friday before CNY). I was supposed to go for Chemistry Lecture but I went for Economics with Pock Thong, May and Rhoda (aka pon my lecture). The lecturer was going through GDP (Gross Domestic Product) or something like that. Surprisingly, a few days ago during Geography Lecture, Mr Josef talked a little about GDP too! No wonder I could understand that lecture even though I don't take Economics.

Went for Contract Bridge competition today at SCBA. Lost 42-92 in IMPs. Overall it's 3-25 in Victory Points. I think our first half was considered very good already because we only lost 30-33 in IMPs. That's like 3 IMPs, and they came 6 minutes late so there was supposedly a 3 IMP penalty so it's actually a tie! Haha. Ok lah I don't think the 3 IMPs were included. Even if they were, I don't think it makes a difference in terms of VPs.

Ok I think I have nothing else to blog about already. My life is hectic yet boring. I haven't finished my tutorials yet.

I think it's time for me to update my blog... at least.

My Common Tests are over! But that was over a week ago. The last 2 papers Mathematics and Chemistry weren't too difficult because I studied for them. I think my CT1 results should be something like EAAA-E (the last one is for GP), something like last year's promos. But if I am not so lucky then probably the E's will become S's. But I think my A's will score higher than last year's.

Last last friday was VOG (VJC's Very Own Games). I could not be bothered so I slacked all the way. Saturday was choir practice and choir BBQ. I was so surprised when my angel revealed herself! No lah, I already knew who she (Kelly) was so it was not very fun.

Had to come up with the practice schedule for the camp, during the last weekend. I also dunno why I took so long to come up with the schedule. Had the camp on Monday and Tuesday. It was fun, thanks to the Games Committees and Exco, but the practices were very rushed. Wednesday was the only free day for me so far. Tried to mug but failed :(. Must be post-exam mood.

Had choir workshop on Thursday and Friday. I think we benefited much from both days... On Thursday, the clinician (Mr Mark Anthony Carpio) cleaned up the little little details that we missed out during our practices. On Friday, we performed on stage. I think it was a good experience for us because we could now tell our weaknesses on stage and can think of ways to overcome them.

We were also busy with Horny Night preparations from Thursday to Saturday. Tenors won again, haha. There was not much competition so after the other sections have performed, we already knew that we were going to win. And we did!

Sigh ok school's reopening tmr. Luckily there is no homework for us this holidays. I think I better start mugging my lecture notes now because I haven't been paying attention last term. I'll update again when I'm free... which is probably a few weeks later.

Wah, brain-dead liao!

Had General Paper, Physics and Geography Common Tests these 2 days. I should get better results than last year for GP and Physics, but for Geography, I am not exactly very sure. I was chionging the paper for the first 1.5 hours, completing about 35% of the paper only. Then 2 hours into the paper I was feeling very sian and wished to stop. The paper is so boring! Horrible. Looks like I'll get horrible marks too hehe.

At least the next 2 papers are not so bad: Maths on Wednesday and Chemistry on Thursday. So I think I can start to slack a bit first.

Haha, I just killed a cockroach in my house. I found the best way to kill cockroaches: use newspapers. Using insecticide will only stink up the whole place. Using newspaper is so effective, one whack then the cockroach will turn over, and once it turns over, it can never flip back even if it is alive.

Ok I think I am just stressed over Common Tests, which is in 3 days' time. First paper on Monday is GP which will probably demoralise me after I finished it, causing me to be unable to concentrate on studying for other subjects. A pass for that paper is relatively difficult for me. Tuesday is Physics and Geography. I plan to use Sunday to study everything of Geography... a rather ambitious plan to try to condense 1 term's work into 1 day. As for Physics, I think I'll need to study that chapter soon because I spent less time last year for promos and dropped by 20 marks :S. Wednesday is Maths but I planning to use that day (and Tuesday night) for Chemistry which is on Thursday. I hoped to do well for Chemistry because I spent much effort last year and improved by 2 grades, so I hope to maintain that good results. Not sure if I can though.

I just got back my Chinese results. Got D/Dist. Quite disappointed with my results given that I scored B last year for promos. And my 'O' level Chinese was totally opposite, B3/Pass, which meant that I did badly for oral but did relatively well for the essay/comprehension. Now it is totally opposite. I don't know if I should retake Chinese or not. Chinese won't affect the university admission score directly (it'll only raise the score if the average score of all subjects increases, but will not decrease the score), but D looks very ugly on the certificate. And I won't be sure if I will be able to score better if I retake.

Ok my aim for this common test is: Reduce the disparity between the contrasting subjects.

Oh my SPA was over not too long ago. Common tests are coming up. I have no time to blog. I need to sleep. Good night.

... then someone comes along and use laser, the latest technology, to measure your height to the nearest 5 decimal places. And then maybe someone else measures your height using the microscope to the nearest atom. What's the purpose, I don't know.

Brought Northlight school kids to the Zoo on Tuesday!

Ok maybe if I were to write my true reflections here, I'll be ranting from beginning to end. So let's be more optimistic, shall we?

My group was initially group 3, but I doubt they even named the groups anyway. But this teacher told us that she needed 2 guys, so Leo and I took charge of 2 different groups of 5 people each. The teacher (her name is Miss Soh) told me that my group has 1 mischievous kid and it is very evident from the way he behaves anyway. Frankly speaking, I have never heard of anyone who swears as much as him, rattling some vulgar words every 10 seconds. Once in a while, his mouth utters some word which I have never heard before in my entire life. I bet if there's a subject called "Profanity" taught in school, they will get full marks for that.

Ok but other than him, there's another one who is really small and weighs 28kg. He refused to move towards the end so I had to carry him. Whoof! There's another one who is quite a follower, rather quiet guy. And the last 2 kids are a pair of twins who were really very very quiet throughout the whole journey.

It was really very hard taking care of them, even though they were just 5 kids. Imagine one of them who always wants to take the lead, and swears if we did not obey him, one of them lagging behind, refusing to move with the group, and me supposedly in charge of their attendance wherever they go. Luckily there was a lunch break (I brought them to the opposite end of the Zoo - oops!), and after lunch I had reinforcements - Boon Yi - who had no group initially so she helped to take care of my group.

We took them to the entrance around 1 hour before the scheduled meeting time because they were all tired. Thank goodness. I guess I was beat too. I would say that I did not really do very well introducing them to the animals in the Zoo because I didn't know how to react to the kids. Hope they enjoyed themselves anyway.

On the way back, I talked to one of the kids in my group. He seemed very mature, or at least more matured than the kids his age. Considering that Northlight school is a school which accepts PSLE dropouts, I was quite surprised when we could share much with each other. He told me that he could speak and listen but cannot read and write. And his Maths is very good. What a pity! He should be deserved into a better school anyway, if not for his written English.

I thought that Northlight students should treasure their school actually, because my impression of the school is that they are very patient with the kids. Although they may be academically-challenged, the school still provides many opportunities for the students to learn as much as they can.

Did you know that crocodile penises are used in traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac?

Chinese is over!
PW is over... almost!

But never mind. At least I have gotten over 90% of my PW marks secured already. I will still need to get my Insights & Reflections done soon.

Even though I don't think I will get my A for PW, because I screwed up my Q&A (10%!), I am still satisfied that it is finally over. Now I can finally start enjoying my holidays.

Oral presentation was ok. We had around 4 rehearsals with Miss Ng, and during every rehearsal, we actually found out something new about our project, haha. It's probably because our group is too slack already, so we actually don't have many things finalised. Luckily we managed to just get through with it like this.

Anyway, all the best to all those who still have their Oral Presentations. Just go all out and impress the assessors. And also all the best to all those taking O and A level examinations.

It was her last day teaching us. After serving her as the chinese rep for about the entire year, I guess the only thing I've paid back to her is by not doing the homework she gave us.

Unfortunately, until now, I still dislike the subject itself. She is not an exceptional teacher, but it does not mean that she is not a good teacher. I can tell that she tries her best in making lessons fun and less stressful, but every time she does that, it seems like she is just repeating what she has done before. She has taught for too many years such that teaching has become something too repetitive for her. I admire her for sacrificing her whole life into the teaching career, as it is not something which anyone can do. That is why it is understandable that the way she teaches is monotonous. She has probably used up all her 'excitement' in her earlier years. Every year, she teaches students who have either failed their O levels higher chinese, or those who did not take it, or those who have failed their year 1 A level chinese and are forced to retake chinese in year 2... in other words, more often than not, she does not get a chance to teach students who are good in chinese. It is kind of a waste of her talent.

I will try my best to get my B for A levels as what she has predicted me to get. Happy retirement, Miss Tan!

I had a stomachache this morning. Quite a bad one because I have never felt so pain in a long while. It was as though I have not eaten for 10 years. So I was tolerating the pain all the way until I reach the canteen, and after eating, I was feeling alright.

But that feeling was just temporary. 1 hour into the maths paper and I was feeling terrible. Yeah I needed to go to the toilet, but not in the middle of exams right? Otherwise there will not be enough time to finish the paper. So perhaps I will just hold for another 120 minutes.

But after around 30 minutes of solving problems and holding back shit, I could not take it any more. I rushed to the toilet while still thinking about the permutation question so that I save time.

When I came back out from the toilet, I met Lincon along the way. We had a brief conversation...

[Lincon]: Hey
[Me]: Sigh I have diarrhoea.
[Lincon]: ... oh shit!

Yeah, literally.

I just had Science Practical Assessments (SPA) for both Physics and Chemistry on Skills C and D.

I guess since I stepped into VJC, the Physics experiments that I have been doing are only on oscillations. Ok maybe not forgetting some of the other minor experiments like messing with electrical circuits... They have very interesting, or should I say innovative ideas about oscillations. In secondary school, there is only one type of oscillation: left-right oscillating a spherical mass suspended by a non-elastic string. In VJC, there is left-right oscillation of mass stuck to a piece of triangular cardboard paper, up-down oscillation of mass suspended by springs (varying the number of springs suspending it too), front-back oscillation of ruler suspended by a strip of writing paper, with additional weights on the ruler, up-down oscillation of metre rule with one end clamped and with masses suspended on the other end, up-down oscillation of metre rule with one end pivoted and the other end suspended by a spring, front-back oscillation of a metre rule, and yesterday... left-right oscillation of a perfectly horizontal metre rule! I mean, it's really so creative that they can try for Guinness World Records: most number of oscillation experiments ever come up by a college. Well that was Physics.

Chemistry is even more interesting. It is so interesting that no one bothered to do the experiment (from my class, that is). It's more of an eyes-on practical assessment rather than a hands-on one. The apparatus given is just for our viewing pleasure only. Too bad I was writing from the start till the end, if I had more time I would have actually try burning the propanol given, just for the sake of doing the experiment. I mean, you are supposed to do the experiment, right?

But oh well I am glad that one more round of SPA is over. Maybe there will be around 2 to 3 more next year. SPA is really a way to get 20% easily.

This is my fifth post since about a month ago, but it is the first post which I am (intending to) put some effort in writing. The last four posts are, for your information, posts which I type for the sake of typing, for the sake of updating my blog, for the sake of not letting my blog die.

I cannot guarantee that I will update my blog like this from now on. Perhaps after typing this post I may leave it even more outdated. If I could I would update like this, of course. But laziness is a factor. Time is another factor.

Laziness has always been a limiting factor for me. I know very well I can stretch my potential further, but you know actions speak louder than words. I never seem to be meeting my own expectations when it comes to being hardworking. You know like how they grade your Project Work, from best to worst: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Approaching Expectations, Nil. I'm somewhere between AE and nil.

I wonder why people use "actions speak louder than words". Of course I am no exception, because I can't find a shorter and a more powerful string of words to use. This idiom in itself is powerful in argument, but literally, it is meaningless. Actions speak louder than words, but it does not mean that the softer party always loses. The loud one shows that he is confident of what he is saying, confident that he is correct. Being soft does not mean that he is not confident, he probably has already given up trying to argue back with the loud one, the adamant yet stupid one.

"Time is not just a magazine". It was said by a senior. Upon entering a Junior College, it just dawned on me that this is really true. Time is so precious that no money can buy. Every minute is precious. You will get a scolding from the Principal for being in the hall at 7.42am when you have to gather at 7.40am. But on a more serious note, time seems tighter the older I get. I did not really see the problem of time constraints last time. Teachers seemed to finish their lessons on time and did not rush for time. But things here are different now. You have lecturers rushing through 20 pages of lecture notes within 1 hour, and not even being able to finish the lecture. The lecturer's name is not important, so let us call him 'Mr Chang'.

Once I was waiting outside the chemistry laboratories for my practical session. While waiting I took a look at the notice boards just outside the laboratories. I noticed that the whole year's lectures timetable was printed out already. And just a side note, we were quite behind time for the chemistry lectures. From there I noticed how tight time was. There was almost no more buffer weeks that they could afford. That means do or die, the lecturers have to complete their lectures by a stipulated week. That explained why Mr Chang was rushing through the last part of his lecture. I never had this problem in Victoria School, when the teachers seem so free in their schedule. Now, every minute is so important, there is absolutely no time to waste.

Because of that, whatever I do requires a schedule to follow, a timetable, a structure. Of course the timetables I come up with do not work on me. Take today for example. I planned to finish chemistry and mathematics tutorials, assignments for the latter, finish studying chemistry to prepare for this coming week's lecture test, read General Paper article and do some Physics. But so far I have only done mathematics and studied for chemistry lecture test. This proves my point exactly - time is so tight that I got to finish all these by this weekend, but my laziness got over me.

I am not really sure if it is VS or VJ which has taught me to be more structured, but my guess is the latter. VS (and its geography elective) has taught me to bullshit, like what I have been doing so far. VJ has taught me to bullshit while following a format. Education certainly has something to progress from! Notice that this post is quite structured. First two paragraphs introduce why I have not been updating and give two reasons. The next two paragraphs talk about the first reason - laziness (actually paragraph four is bullshit if you have not noticed) and the next two is about time. Then the discussion shifts to being structured. I have no idea how the rest of this post will be about, where it will lead me to, where it will end, etc.

Being structured is not easy. Firstly, you have to know everything that needs to be said/done. If you are really smart then you do not need to write them down, but if you cannot process everything in your mind then you should jot down these things. After that then can you start arranging the points into a certain format to follow. It seems easy, but it is not. Some things are not like science where you can just 'know everything' and just jot them down. Also, arranging these points into something logical and something which flows is no mean feat too.

In case you are wondering, I was actually referring to something I had done for VS choir. I planned early this year to talk to the new committee. Talk about what? Choir stuffs of course, but the topic is so broad that I did not know where to start from. But by forcing myself to find an area to talk about, I have gradually built up the skill to be able to be structured, a skill which will remain with me for the rest of my life. By the way I have lost an interest to talk to them, mainly because of two reasons: lack of time (no, not because I am lazy now), and because I feel that the new committee should be able to manage on their own.

Being structured has its downsides as well. You become too inflexible in the things you do. You do not take into account human nature. You become too involved in the schedule you have to follow. This will lead to criticisms to your actions especially if you hold a high post in a particular co-curricular activity, and especially when that CCA has members who are leaders in themselves. Issues need to be brought up, discussions need to be made and time and effort need to be spent (read: lack of time and laziness).

The solution? To strike a balance, so that people will not argue with you. You cannot be too structured, yet cannot be too flexible (otherwise you do no productive work). It seems easy, but if you think you have struck the balance, do think again. Are you feeding the baby on the nose? Are you sure you have struck the balance? You cannot feed the baby with food too high in nutritional value (being too structured) because it will not eat too high quality food. The other side is the same. You have to add some garnish to make it look appetizing, and a bit of salt and pepper to make it taste nice. In this context, you have to know exactly what you are doing, by memorising the whole schedule in your head and not just follow it blindly or not even following it at all, then use the schedule to suit to people's needs. Being structured is level two, level three is knowing how to strike the balance.

These levels increase with increasing level of maturity, and longer time of course. So let M be the level of maturity and T be the length of time. So the equation M = kT is set up, where k is a constant. The constant varies from person to person. Some people have a small k, which means that they take longer to become more matured. Some people do not even fit into this equation, their level of maturity against time goes like a logarithm curve, like M = p lg(T), where p is another constant. For those who cannot visualise or are lazy to take out a calculator, the curve shows a decreasing rate of increase in maturity with respect to time. Although the curve has no horizontal asymptotes (the level of maturity has no limit), it takes even longer to achieve a even higher level of maturity. Just like in Maple Story or even other role-playing games, the higher your level, the longer it takes to level up.

Take note that the level of arrogance has no relationship with the level of maturity. Some may argue that arrogance will directly influence the level of maturity because if you are arrogant, you do not know the right from wrong and hence your level of maturity decreases. The fact is that there is no direct way of measuring maturity. My definition is that maturity is how open-minded a person is and it does not decrease under normal circumstances (except in accidents or illnesses). But the level of arrogance can float at any point in time. Once you become mature, you show off to the world, only to be neglected and rejected by the world. You start to realise it, and your maturity increases while your arrogance decreases, both being good news of course. Then the cycle repeats and your arrogance level looks like a sin curve. Some people may determine from this post (or in fact, from me) that I am arrogant. I take it as a compliment because it shows that I am more matured than before. For those who are really serious that I am arrogant, ok I am sorry, but I will try to change.

This is the result of the education I am receiving now. I can describe it in one short sentence: it is driving me up the wall! It causes some mild head damage which leads one to blog in such a manner. And if you had lasted all the way here honestly (and correctly, by reading through all the bullshits and not just scrolling down in under two seconds), I congratulate you, and I hereby propose you a job which you may have some future in: marker of geography examination papers. I have no time now, I need to go sleep already.

Today was Feeling Fab! Like totally feeling fab...

I signed up for fencing in the morning and archery in the afternoon. Sounds like very fun activities. In fact I think so too, they are very fun indeed, if everything could turn out right.

Fencing was the only activity to be held outside VJC compound in the morning. So there were supposed to be two buses at the bus bay waiting for us at 8am. There were no buses, until 8.15am, when I saw two buses packed full of VJC students leaving the college from the PT area, bypassing the bus bay without stopping. So I missed my fencing activity and went for magic instead. It got delayed by one and a half hours, and the venue was even changed. In the end they could only teach/perform for an hour.

I crashed rockclimbing. It was quite fun just that I realised that I am not as fit as before already. I felt my arm muscles ache after climbing just once. The first time I ever climbed was when I was in primary 6, and during that time I felt that rock climbing was rather easy and did not require much effort. I think I have grown fatter and have not been utilising my muscles these few years.

Archery was quite boring because there were like 80 over people and only 4 lanes. I only managed to shoot 3 arrows in 30 minutes. And the instructor was very luo suo. Her theory lasted for 45 minutes haha. So I left halfway.

Feeling MAD, not Feeling Fab. Haha

Just a short update.

Maths exam last Wednesday was quite demoralizing. Ok I think I tried my best but I still lost around 17 marks, and I don't know what other careless mistakes I will make so hopefully I still score an A. I think I will do better in Physics than Maths actually.

Thursday's chemistry was difficult! Actually it was not difficult, it was just because there was not enough time. I think quite some time ago (last semester) I asked one of my seniors whether we will have enough time to finish Chemistry paper during exams or need to chiong. Then he/she said sure have enough time. Now I know I cannot believe that. I don't know what I can score for the paper, seriously, hopefully something decent (read: D... ecent).

HAHA yesterday was Chinese. It was so easy! I slept for quite long because I know I can score very well already! So easy (read: E... asy). Like what Miss Tan Pheck Hua, Chinese HOD, said, "考到一个 E 就可以了."

Hmm I feel very free now. Don't have anything to mug haha. Before exams I panicked and started to mug. Now maybe mug choir scores.

That kind of feeling just rekindled. So nostalgic. Not nostalgic actually, nothing from the past to be reminded of but it was just something I have done before. It's not something that can be described with simple words, like happy, disappointed... I think it's... crazy.

Oh at least the worst exams are all over. Geography was yesterday and this morning was General Paper (GP). Because of my poor sleeping habits, I slept for 3 hours this morning so I was yawning away while doing my GP exam. Luckily I did not fall asleep before I finished writing my essay.

After the essay part of the exam, the chief invigilator said, "You may leave the exam hall, please come back by ##:## am." So I was telling Ryan that I would rather stay in the hall because there was no place I could go anyway. Half a minute later an invigilator told us to leave so that they could distribute the papers. Hmph so it was not an invitation for us to leave :(. Left my things there in the hall

Went to the choir room for a while before returning to the hall. When I returned...

WHERE DID MY WATER BOTTLE GO TO????

I think somebody must have kicked it because I placed it on the floor beside my chair. Kicked until I could not find it at all. So I had no water bottle for the rest of the day and had to learn to be a camel.

Then I had Economics exam. Wow, I have never written so much in my entire life. I simply regurgitated everything that I had studied into the paper. The question on Market Failure was quite easy, but I was a little shocked by the one on the case study of the hotel. Nonetheless I still managed to finish the questions. The essays were very challenging because they really made me think about what to write. The use of keywords and diagrams were very important too, both which I have used, as they are guaranteed to help me score more marks. I think I am going to do quite......

Oh sorry I forgot I don't take Economics. Geography yesterday was nearly the opposite from the previous paragraph. Because I did not study enough, I went into the exam hall with no knowledge of mitigation of tectonic hazards nor evidence of plate movements, both questions which I did and am prepared to score low. I managed to finish the paper, of course, how much can you expect me to write? I am prepared to get an S, or if I am really unlucky and the teachers decide to be more strict in their marking, I will get a U grade... wait, U means Ungraded, so there is no grade.

The above 2 paragraphs are actually dedicated to Gabriel Chee, who keeps forgetting that I take Geography rather than Economics. Twice he asked me about Economics and twice I played on with him. Gabriel, be ashamed thankful, I seldom dedicate anything to anyone, you should feel very embarrassed honoured by now.

May loves this slogan. I don't know why also.

Went for Geography tutorial this morning. 7am, whoa! So early. Was late as expected, but luckily the tutorial has not started yet. A 90-minute session on population geography really showed how much I knew (sarcastic) about the topic itself. Guess I did not study enough. Then Kevin was indirectly suanning me because he claimed that he has not studied yet but yet he knew so much.

Slept in the choir room for 2 hours before going to Bishan for the 2nd day of Nationals Schools Bridge Teams Championships. 1st day was yesterday. We played against 7 other teams from other schools (which actually means all teams) over 2 days, and I am quite proud to say that we thrash them badly (sarcastic), scoring in Victory Points: 20-10, 21-9, 25-0, 25-0, 25-2, 24-6, 20-10. Wow. I actually hoped that we could at least win 1 team (really!). Never mind, it was good experience, especially that our team consists of J1s only and all the other teams have J2s only and NO J1s.

There was one board where I made a grave mistake as my opponents overruff my winner with his master trump, resulting in contract down 1. Didn't catch that? That means I trumped my own winner and my opponent trumped with something bigger, so effectively I lost 1 trump which resulted in -100 score instead of +620.

Ok actually I didn't want to come today, but I am so nice because I know Hong Aik doesn't want to play contract bridge alone haha.

I guess no more contract bridge for the next few weeks. Really gotta study for mid-years, and after mid-years it will be Wales!

I hope I dun have nightmares about Bridge tonight (and for subsequent nights as well). I had a few recently and was having headaches about counting, trumping, bidding etc.

Oh yeah Dr Wong (president of Singapore Contract Bridge Association) was there. Then each team gets to take a picture with him. When it was our turn, the club manager said, "VJC will come back next year!" At first we were wondering what she meant... was she trying to encourage us after our heavy loss? Then we realised that it was because we were all J1s. Haha.
